Capital Campaign for the Restoration of St. Alphonsus Church

During the last quarter of 2005, we began the second phase of the Capital Campaign to restore St. Alphonsus.

Having prepared the groundwork through a successful capital campaign in 2002 and followed by important preliminary work, we are poised to undertake a new campaign so that we can finish the job and fix up the church. We may be biased, but we believe we have one of the most beautiful churches in the Archdiocese (in a new book entitled Heavenly City, our church is featured, and described as “one of the grandest gothic churches in the city.”) It was built on a scale that boggles the mind, and it is unlikely that a parish could ever manage to replicate something like this today. We are heirs to our ancestors’ foresight and faith, and it is an enormous gift to be able to celebrate the Eucharist in a beautiful space that is so monumental and imposing.

As of Christmas 2005, our initial pledges total over $1.1 million dollars.

This is about half of what we will need in order to finish the complete interior restoration of the church.

If you would like more information about how you can help to restore this landmark church and help the parish continue its mission in a new century, contact Fr. Hurlbert at the rectory, (773-525-0709 or jhurlbert@aol.com) and ask him to send you a packet with information on the campaign, along with a twelve-minute DVD outlining our hopes for the restoration.

Contributing to this restoration project is an act of discipleship, and it is a privilege to be able to participate. It is also our responsibility– those of us who worship here have the responsibility of maintaining the building that has been handed down to us. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus says that “Where your treasure is, there also your heart will be.” Our hearts are here at St. Alphonsus; let us match our devotion with a physical representation of that which means most to us by making significant sacrifices so that our church can be restored.
