Young Adult Ministry at St. Alphonsus
Due to our location in the Lakeview neighborhood, St. Alphonsus is a hub for Young Adult Ministry in Chicago. We offer a number of seasonal and ongoing opportunities for social connections and spiritual development.
The Young Adult Ministry is coordinated by a Board. Its members are Megan Bowen, Matt Mulka, and Pete Mockaitis. You can reach them here.
There is also a monthly newsletter, featuring the latest activities. You can subscribe to it by clicking the Newletter link on the left side of this page.
A great way to connect with others is to join the monthly Cocktails After Church group (fourth Sunday of the month), which goes to a local establishment for drinks and dinner after the 5:00 PM Sunday mass.
Another opportunity is YAM Wednesdays. Once a month a group meets with Fr. Shawn Gould after mass and Eucharistic adoration to discuss specific topics. 7:30 PM in either the Lower Church or the rectory. (Check the bulletin and Facebook for details.)
Views from the Veranda
Every July, Young Adult Ministry organizes Views from the Veranda. These Tuesday sessions feature fantastic speakers on a variety of topics, along with socializing each week. In June, the upcoming schedule of speakers will be available on the web site and in the bulletin.
Retreats
There are two retreats offered each year.
- A Fall one-day retreat, held the weekend before Thanksgiving.
- There is also a Lenten overnight retreat. Check the web site and the bulletin in March for details about 2012.
Social Opportunities
Speed Dating is always a sell-out. This event, held in the fall, is a great opportunity to make new friends - and possibly meet 'the one.'
The Volleyball League starts in the winter and continues through early spring. Sign ups are available in church in the weeks before play begins.
There is a Wine, Beer and Cheese Tasting event, held every spring.
Resources for Young Adults
St. Alphonsus partners with Charis Ministries for a number of events. Charis, a Jesuit outreach, offers a number of retreat opportunities, as well as ongoing spiritual direction.
Busted Halo, an outreach of the Paulists, is an online resource aimed at young adults.
